5-min Speech Therapy Activities You can do at Home

1. Use the Counter

Go to a sporting goods store and buy a counter. This is a small, circular object with a single button. Each time you press a button, the counter goes up one by one.

Set a goal for your child (the number of repetitions) and tell him or her to press a button every time he or she performs the skill correctly. Once he has dialled the target number, he is done.

Give him time and see if he can beat his old points (but he has to say well to be counted, no chasing and wasting!).

2. The game of collapse

Put a bunch of plastic coins in the bag but red one of them. After each repetition, you and your child will both contribute one coin.

If someone withdraws a red coin, he or she must return all his or her coins (in cash!).

Anyone with more coins after 5 minutes wins. (I found this one at www.5minutekids.com, love it!)

3. Hold Yoga Poses

Check out pictures of yoga poses for kids online. Ask your child to pick one and hold it while doing his or her skill.

See how many repetitions he can enter before he loses his standing.

4. Place Blocks in the towel

Each time your child practices this skill, give him or her a block to place on the tower. When the tower falls, turn the blocks over and start over.

See how long he can make it before it falls.

5. Play Hopscotch

Draw a hopscotch track (or other situations/numbers and tell your child to do the skill once before he jumps one-step or walks off the track.

6. Tortoise Race

You need at least two people for this but can be a second person if needed.

Sit both people down with their knees up. Every time your child makes a skill, everyone gets to move on with one scoot.

The floor should be flat, not raised and jumping.

Anyone who gets a long distance in 5 minutes wins.

7. Moving Beans or Marbles

Place the beans or marbles in a small container. Find the same second bowl.

For each repeat, move one bean or marble to another container. When all the beans/marbles are shaken, you're done!

8. Make Me Jump

Each time your child makes a skill, have someone (you or another adult child) do something else.

See how many times your child can make that person jump within 5 minutes.

9. Playdough

Give your child a small number of toys (or something similar) in each repetition. Once your child has all the play dough, he or she can play with it.

I was shocked

Start with your hand on your baby's head or toes.

For each repetition, get a little closer to his stomach. When you get to his stomach, tickle him like crazy. Then, start over and repeat for 5 minutes.
